Pronefra
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is particularly common in older cats. It is a slowly progressing condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their function. A tailored lifestyle, nutrition, and additional support can help keep your cat or dog as comfortable and vital as possible. Pharmacy4pets is happy to help you with this.
Pronefra is a palatable oral suspension specially developed to support kidney function in cats and dogs with chronic kidney insufficiency. Pronefra can easily be ordered via our webshop. No prescription from your veterinarian is required.
What makes Pronefra so special?
The innovative formula of Pronefra contains four carefully selected ingredients, each contributing in its own way to supporting kidney function:
- Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate: bind phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing the amount of phosphate absorbed from food.
- Chitosan: helps bind uremic toxins in the digestive tract.
- Marine oligopeptides: support the maintenance of balanced blood pressure.
Availability and usage of Pronefra
Pronefra is available in a convenient 60 ml package – ideal for cats and small dogs. Thanks to its palatable formula, Pronefra is easy to administer – directly into the mouth before or after a meal, or mixed with food. The included dosing syringe is based on body weight, making dosing simple.
At a body weight of 4 kg, one package of Pronefra lasts approximately one month (1 ml twice daily per 4 kg body weight).
Additional support for chronic kidney disease (CKD)
If your cat or dog is using Pronefra to support kidney function, additional measures and products can help keep your pet in good condition for as long as possible. This includes special renal diets, supplements, and if necessary, medication.
Renal diets for CKD
A kidney diet forms the foundation of support for chronic kidney disease. Foods such as Sanimed Renal Cat or Sanimed Renal Dog contain reduced phosphorus, high-quality proteins, adjusted salt and potassium levels, and extra omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. They are also highly palatable and energy-rich – important, as animals with CKD may eat less.
Medication for high blood pressure or protein loss via urine
Many cats with CKD develop high blood pressure or lose protein via urine. In such cases, the veterinarian may prescribe medications such as:
- Semintra – available in two strengths, depending on the target (protein loss or hypertension)
- Amodip – a tablet-form blood pressure medication specifically for cats
These medications are available by prescription.
Additional supplements and monitoring
In addition to Pronefra, there are other supplements that help bind phosphate and toxins, such as Porus One or Ipakitine. Does your cat still have elevated phosphate levels despite a renal diet? Then adding one of these supplements might help.
Some cats with CKD have low potassium levels, which can lead to muscle weakness. In that case, Tumil-K can help restore potassium levels.
It is also important to encourage sufficient water intake and closely monitor overall health. Key points include:
- Closely monitoring body weight.
- Regularly checking the urine (or having it checked). The Trixie Urine Test for Cats and Katkor can be useful tools.
- Having your pet’s overall physical condition, blood pressure, and blood values regularly checked by a veterinarian.
