Exzolt

Exzolt is used for the treatment of red poultry mites (Dermanyssus gallinae), also known as red mites or blood mites, in chickens. Treating blood mites can be frustrating, and a combined approach is recommended. Pharmacy4Pets helps you get rid of those annoying itchy pests.

How Exzolt works

Exzolt 50ml contains 10 mg of fluralaner per ml. Fluralaner kills feeding mites on treated chickens and stops egg production by female mites for 15 days after the first administration. This breaks the mite's life cycle. The effect against Dermanyssus gallinae occurs within 4 hours after the mites begin feeding on treated chickens. Exzolt can be given to egg-laying hens, and the eggs can be consumed during treatment with Exzolt.

How should Exzolt be administered?

Exzolt is administered via drinking water. The dosage is 0.5 mg of fluralaner per kg of body weight, which equals 0.05 ml per kg. The treatment consists of two administrations, 7 days apart.

The product must be mixed with the amount of water the chickens drink in one day. Determine this amount based on their water consumption in the days prior to treatment. Make sure no other water source is available during the treatment.

To calculate the correct dosage, the total body weight of all chickens must be determined: Required amount of Exzolt (ml) per day = total body weight (kg) × 0.05 ml.

For more information, see the package leaflet and follow your veterinarian's advice.

Note: Exzolt must not enter the environment/surface water, as it is harmful to aquatic animals. Dispose of any leftovers according to local regulations.

Red poultry mite in chickens

The red poultry mite (Dermanyssus gallinae), commonly referred to as blood mite, is an annoying parasite that often affects birds. The mite feeds on blood at night and hides in cracks and crevices of the coop during the day. The red mite can bite not only chickens but also other animals such as cats, rodents, and even humans. However, they can only reproduce on bird blood. The mites can also transmit bacteria and viruses, such as Salmonella and E. coli. Under favorable conditions (warm and humid), the population can grow explosively within a week.

Symptoms of blood mites in chickens

Blood mites are very persistent and can cause significant issues in chickens, including:

  • Restlessness in the coop, especially at night.
  • Baldness, skin irritation, and itching.
  • Reduced egg production and poorer egg quality.
  • Anemia due to blood loss.
  • Stress, weakness, and increased susceptibility to disease.

Treatment of blood mites in chickens

Red mites can survive up to 10 months without a blood meal and have developed resistance to many pesticides, making them difficult to control. They spend only a short time on the chicken and hide the rest of the time in cracks and crevices in the coop, making eradication even more challenging.

Since complete eradication is difficult, a combined approach is recommended:

  • Exzolt: this product kills mites when they feed on the chicken and prevents their reproduction.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: regularly clean the chicken coop thoroughly, focusing on cracks and crevices, and seal them with lime, for example.
  • High temperatures: mites die at temperatures above 45°C. Burning corners and cracks can help eliminate the mites.
  • Use of oils: essential oils such as neem and rapeseed oil may help in mite control.
  • Diatomaceous earth (silica): a natural powder that extracts moisture and fat from the mites and has an abrasive effect, causing the mites to die.
  • Predatory mites: natural enemies of the poultry mite that can help keep the population under control.
  • Special perches that mites cannot climb to feed on the chickens.

Controlling the red poultry mite requires a systematic and regular approach, as the parasite adapts quickly and is difficult to eradicate completely.
