Thiamacare

Thiamacare is used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid gland, in cats. Thiamacare is a solution, which makes administration easier for many cats compared to tablets. Thiamacare is available in a 30ml package and can only be purchased with a prescription from your veterinarian.

The effect of Thiamacare

Thiamacare contains 10mg of thiamazole per ml. Thiamazole blocks the production of thyroid hormone. It can be used both for the stabilization of hyperthyroidism prior to surgery to remove the thyroid glands, and for the long-term treatment of an overactive thyroid gland.

How to use Thiamacare

Administer Thiamacare directly into the cat's mouth. Do not mix it with food; its effectiveness when mixed with food has not been proven.

The starting dose is 5 mg of thiamazole (0.5 ml of Thiamacare) per day. Divide this dose into two administrations: once in the morning and once in the evening. To ensure the treatment is effective, it is important to give both Thiamacare and food at the same time each day. It is important that your cat always has access to sufficient fresh drinking water.

Your veterinarian will recommend regular blood tests, both to determine the correct dosage as quickly as possible (as it may vary per cat) and to monitor for any side effects.

Precautions when using Thiamacare

Please take the following precautions when handling this veterinary medicinal product:

• Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mouth.
• Wash your hands thoroughly after use, and after cleaning up vomit or the litter box of a treated cat.
• Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or who may be pregnant should not administer the medicine or come into contact with litter or vomit from treated cats.
• Women of childbearing age should wear disposable gloves when using the medicine or when handling litter or vomit.
